Last week the Chancellor confirmed that the Cambridge Northern Fringe East is one of four schemes in the country set to be awarded a share of £717 million of Housing Infrastructure Funding (HIF).
Minister of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Kit Malthouse, has since confirmed £227 million of Housing Infrastructure Funding (HIF) has been allocated to enable the relocation of Anglian Water’s Water Recycling Centre and unlock one of Cambridge’s last remaining brownfield sites for regeneration.
The project was prioritised by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority for the Housing Infrastructure Fund in 2017 and last year U+I, along with development partner TOWN, were appointed as master developer to transform Anglian Water’s current Water Recycling Centre and land owned by Cambridge City Council into a major residential-led mixed-use urban quarter.
The 47-hectare site will deliver more than 5,000 homes as well as one million sq. ft. of office, retail, community and leisure space – providing north Cambridge with an exceptional new neighbourhood. Matthew Sampson, Development Director at U+I, said, “Confirmation that North East Cambridge area has been awarded HIF funding is a huge leap forward and we can now progress plans to unlock the potential of the site and drive positive change. There is much work to be done, and we look forward to working in close partnership with the project team and involving the local community from the beginning, to ensure we tap into everyone’s knowledge and work together to deliver a sustainable, new community in Cambridge.”
Jonny Anstead, Director at TOWN, said, “This is a truly unique opportunity to deliver many much-needed new homes, and in doing so to create a distinctive new part of Cambridge that will offer an amazing quality of life and respond to many of the challenges of the 21st century. The next stage of the project will be to start consultation for on the emerging plans for the development of the existing site and wider area.
